30/10/18  |  Voluntary Field Research Assistant in Ankasa National Park  |  University of Chester and NGO West African Primate Conservation Action

As part of an ongoing research collaboration between the University of Chester and the NGO West African Primate Conservation Action, a field team working closely with Ghanaian conservation practitioners will carry out primate surveys in Ankasa National Park, Ghana, between 25th January and 25th April 2019 using a combination of camera traps, sound recorders and line transects. The aim is to assess primate abundance and habitat use, as well as to quantify the current level of human impacts in this park. The project’s results are essential for the preservation of these primate populations and their highly threatened habitat, in particular by informing the prioritisation of community conservation initiatives shown to reduce illegal logging and hunting in this region.

A research assistant is required to assist our current MRes student with data collection. This would involve around three months’ fieldwork; the pattern of work would be around six days camping in the rainforest and two days resting (at a local lodge). Team members must be prepared to cope with a challenging climate and terrain – see last year’s students’ blog for more background (https://capethreepoints.weebly.com/).

Flights from the UK would be paid for by project costs; applicants from other countries would need to pay part of their flight costs if these were significantly more than flights from the UK. Visa, travel costs within Ghana and all rest day accommodation, food (both in field and on rest days) and field camping equipment (tent, cooking equipment etc) would all be paid by the project. The research assistant would have to pay for their own vaccinations, anti-malarial medication and travel insurance and supply their own sleeping bag, travel mat, field clothing etc. The project would be from around 25th January to 25th April 2019 – this would include around 2 days in Accra, 2 days travelling to the Western region with a night’s rest stop, around 18 rest days and 2 days travelling back to Accra at the end of the project.

The closing date for applicants is 16th November. Interviews will be conducted (in person or via Skype) in the week beginning 26th November.
