Position Description:
Project Chimps is located on 236-acres of forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains of rural northern Georgia. Project Chimps is seeking a full-time chimpanzee caregiver who is committed to our mission of providing the highest standard of lifetime sanctuary care to chimpanzees in need. The caregiver will be interacting with the chimpanzees daily and working in close proximity. This position reports directly to the Manager of Chimpanzee Care.
General Duties:
- Serve and prepare chimpanzees’ meals
- Develop, create, and distribute enrichment
- Clean indoor and outdoor chimpanzee areas
- Distribute individual medications as directed by the veterinarian
- Regular behavioral observations of chimpanzees
- Record and evaluate chimpanzees’ physical, social, and psychological wellness
- Implement behavioral training sessions when instructed
- Above job duties are not intended to be all-inclusive
Required Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 2 years of experience caring for great apes in a captive setting
- Have a philosophy of care which complements Project Chimps’ mission
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work in variable weather conditions as well as in physically demanding terrain
- Basic computer/tablet proficiency
- Good observational, organizational, and time management skills
- Strong communication skills and enjoy being part of a team
- Availability to work weekends and some holidays
- Willingness to meet all staff health standards and immunizations
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
- Education in primate behavior, husbandry, or related field
- Professional experience in chimpanzee sanctuary care
- Animal training experience, preferably with chimpanzees
- Experience using ZIMS
Compensation:
- Hourly rate commensurate with education and experience
- Full insurance compensation for medical, dental, and vision
- Paid leave includes sick, vacation, maternity/paternity, and bereavement
- Tuberculosis testing and mandatory vaccinations will be covered by employer
